Arts-led Urban Regeneration
Using major arts projects as catalysts for the regeneration of brown field sites was the unique concept underlying the regeneration of Gateshead Quays, which is not only home to major visual and performing arts centres, but uses arts interventions to enable navigation around this new arts & visitor quarter. This novel approach to place-making achieved a rapid raising of the profile of Gateshead onto an international level, resulting in approaches for sharing of this expertise from organisations and cities across the EU.
This successful approach to regeneration was acknowledged at the 2005 RIBA Stirling Awards where Gateshead won the Arts Council "Client of the Year" Award.
